There's this joke that seems to be popular amongst users of the social site My Life Is Average, or MLIA. You say, "hey, gullible is written in the ceiling" and when your victim looks up you have a good laugh at how gullible they were.
Sometimes, I feel like I'm the person staring up. My employees are constantly making excuses for their poor performance and I fall for it every time. Today was a typical example. A rep gave me a reason for not doing something and she sold it very well. I argued her case to my boss, who was skeptical. He suggested I audit her work, which I did. Guess which of us was right? Yeah, if it had been me this blog entry would have a completely different title.
I guess I need to get harder. I really like to believe my reps when they report to me; I don't like to see the bad in them. But, that kind of thinking is biting me in the ass so it's time to get tough.
Grrrrr.
